A functioning governance system is crucial for democracy, which includes well-functioning institutions, interpersonal trust, active citizens, and freedom of expression. Such a society relies on independent and pluralistic media. However, today, free press and freedom of expression are under attack in many parts of the world. Economic crises and technological changes have weakened the position of the media, which is exploited by totalitarian states and anti-democratic movements to silence critics and spread propaganda.

Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) aims to use the latest technology, such as AI, to promote collaboration, engagement, and economic and social sustainability for journalism by strengthening a digital platform that prioritizes fact-based and objective discussions and serves as a tool for investigative journalism to reach more people.

The project is supported with 3 230 000 SEK.

Project Activities

In this project, MDIF will enable further development and upgrading of the digital platform Future of News, which serves as an alternative to social media for investigative and fact-based news. This work is part of a larger initiative to build an international platform of independent newsrooms, which together transform the digital landscape into a safer and more independent means of communication.

Reason for Project Support

The right to freedom of expression and opinion is enshrined in the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is an individual right that promotes the collective good.
