Virgin Unite USA, Inc., through the Planetary Guardians initiative, seeks in this project to increase knowledge about the state of the planet by disseminating updated research on the Planetary Boundaries and by advocating for the framework to be used in the monitoring of countries’ environmental commitments.

The Planetary Boundaries framework describes the environmental processes that govern the earth’s overall stability and defines safe limits for the extent of human impact the planet can withstand while remaining stable and resilient. The framework includes thresholds for, among other things, global warming, biodiversity loss, pollution, water use, and land use. The latest research, published in Science Advances in 2023, shows that six of the nine planetary boundaries have been crossed, and human pressure on all boundaries continues to increase, with the exception of the ozone layer. These global processes also influence and depend on one another. When one boundary is crossed, it risks triggering negative effects on the others, potentially accelerating a harmful feedback loop. As more boundaries are exceeded, uncertainty grows, as does the risk that the combined pressures may push the earth into a new state – ending the long period of stability and predictability that humanity has depended on. It is more important than ever to act decisively to reverse this trend.

What happens in the project?

  • The project marks the starting point for publishing an annual assessment of the planet’s current state based on the nine planetary boundaries.
  • During Climate Week in New York, an updated analysis will be launched.
  • In 2025, COP30 will take place in Brazil—a country that has committed to ending deforestation by 2030 and reaching net‑zero emissions by 2030. The project will provide extensive support to help achieve these ambitious goals by using the Planetary Boundaries as a guiding framework.
  • Within the project, research on the planetary boundaries will be translated into concrete and actionable policy recommendations.
  • Briefings for key stakeholders will be developed, side events will be organized during COP30, and participation in high‑level discussions will be undertaken to influence and inspire other countries to adopt ambitious agendas.
  • As part of the project, strategic visits will also be made to regions that are both critically important for the health of the planet and that have progressive environmental policies.

Why is the project supported?

All life on earth depends on a healthy and stable planet. It is crucial to shed light on the state of the planet, make the extent of human impact visible, and create the conditions necessary for strong and targeted action.
