Women human rights defenders (WHRDs) are champions of change, and pivotal actors in the drive to tackle the challenges faced by communities around the world. WHRDs are lawyers, journalists, trade unionists, grassroots community activists, and peacebuilders. Within the global context of closing civil society space, WHRDs are at heightened risk of experiencing threats and attacks in response to their work, including genderbased violence, harassment and threats against their children. In recent year WHRDs have also been at heightened risk of defamation. The project will support approximately 90 Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) and grassroots activists who are at risk because of their work to protect and advance human rights in their communities. Through this project WHRD are supported through a number of capacity development activities.
