Artistic freedom is protected by the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Despite this, artists, writers, performers and other cultural creators are subjected to censorship, oppression, persecution, imprisonment, torture and murder around the world. There are several organizations that work to protect and/or draw attention to the situation of cultural creators, however, the initiatives all too often seem under the radar. For these to succeed, the public and decision-makers need to know and understand the importance of artistic freedom. This can be done, among other things, by bringing to life the stories of the cultural creators, who usually are hidden in reports, and show that artistic freedom is threatened.

In this project, Safe Haven’s Freedom Talks, will develop new means of disseminating knowledge on the threats towards artistic freedom and highlight the actions taken by many artists, NGOs, and institutions around the world to protect the fundamental human right to free speech.
