600 million people in southern Africa live without access to electricity. They light their homes with kerosene and cook food over open fires or on stoves that are harmful to both the climate and their own health. The vast majority of these people live in rural poverty. The most vulnerable are women and girls, who usually have the responsibility to travel long distances to find kerosene oil and firewood. They breathe in the hazardous smoke when they cook and are subjected to the dangers of being outdoors in the dark. Solar Sister Inc. helps to combat climate change and improve the living conditions of women and girls in rural areas in Nigeria and Tanzania through training and distribution of solar lamps and environmentally friendly stoves.
