In this project, Independent Diplomat will build sustainable human rights advocacy capacity for Myanmar's Rohingya and Muslim minorities through grassroots training in documentation and international diplomacy.

In Myanmar, serious and systematic human rights violations against the Rohingya and other Muslim minorities continue, especially following the 2021 military coup which has intensified violence and restricted civil society. Despite the 2017 genocide and the fact that nearly two million Rohingya live in exile or refugee camps, their protection is not prioritized in the region or by the international community. Local activists lack training in documenting abuses, which hampers international advocacy efforts.

Through this project, Independent Diplomat aims to train human rights defenders to document abuses and advocate for the protection of vulnerable groups in Myanmar, and to provide Rohingya and Muslim minorities with a stronger and more credible voice in regional and international policy discussions.

What happens in the project?

  • Refugees/activists will be trained in areas such as advocacy, countering disinformation, and media literacy. They will then apply these skills in practice through several initiatives.
  • A regional and international advocacy program will be created. Activities will include developing advocacy campaigns, organizing meetings with decision-makers in the region, and producing a joint report highlighting the types of human rights violations that have occurred, along with recommendations for actions to address them through multiple reports.
  • International campaigns will be carried out to promote the rights of minorities in forums such as ASEAN and the United Nations.
  • Capacity-building activities will be implemented; a strong network of trained human rights defenders will be established, and meetings and support groups will be arranged among these individuals.

Why is the project supported?

By strengthening the ability of minorities to document abuses and creating platforms where their voices can be heard, the project contributes to the defense of human rights, increases the inclusion of marginalized groups, and lays the foundation for a more just, peaceful, and sustainable society.
