Sturgeon fish could once be found along the entire Atlantic coast and playfully swam in many of Europe’s great rivers. Now they have nearly disappeared. Over fishing and the destruction of their living environments have made the fish one of the world’s most threatened animal groups and today they are found playfully swimming in only a few of Europe’s rivers. In the Rioni River in Georgia there are six types of endangered species of Sturgeon that are decreasing at an alarming rate. The fishing of Sturgeon is illegal, but the river is currently unprotected and many fishermen and authorities are unaware of the importance of maintaining this species of fish. In this project, Fauna & Flora International are working to save Sturgeon from extinction in one of their last remaining environments.
