SOIL (Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods)

The sanitation crisis is mirrored on a global scale with over 2 billion people still lacking access to a toilet and Haiti is one of the countries where this problem is at its worst. 66 per cent of the urban population, in Haiti, lacks access to safe sanitation systems, and less than 1 per cent of the human waste is handled in a secure manner. The situation in Haiti has led to extensive outbreaks of Cholera and diarrhea among children causing poor quality of life and, in extreme cases, to life threatening conditions.

SOIL has developed a sanitation service that meets the standards set by the Sustainable Development Goals and specifically designed for dense urban communities. By transforming waste into compost, SOIL recaptures valuable nutrients and ensures that those nutrients are reapplied to Haiti’s depleted soils, a critical intervention in a country where approximately 45% of the population is malnourished, largely due to declining soil fertility and reduced national production.
