Since the start of the war in Ukraine, more than 8 million people have fled the country. Most of the refugees are in the region and Moldova, Hungary and Bulgaria have received between 80 000 and 90 000 refugees each, many of whom are children. Moldova is thus the country in Europe that has received the most refugees from Ukraine per capita. These countries lack experience in hosting so many refugees, while grappling with their own challenges such as poverty and social inequality. The lack of resources can also create conflicts between refugees and the countries’ locals. The lack of resources in these countries, combined with challenges that refugees need to deal with such as post-traumatic stress, and a difficult integration process, means that the risk for abuse and exploitation of these refugees is very high, especially for women and children.

In this project, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) seeks to provide protection and education to women and children who have fled the war in Ukraine to Moldova, Hungary and Bulgaria.

The project is supported with SEK 7 650 000.
