Bold ideas. Global voices. Real impact. The Sir Harry Evans Summit brings leaders, journalists, and innovators together to defend truth, strengthen democracy, and shape the future of free expression worldwide.

Global press freedom is under severe pressure. Investigative journalists face growing threats, censorship, legal harassment, and digital disinformation, all of which undermine democratic transparency and public trust in the media. Governments and other powerful actors attempt to silence independent scrutiny, while digital platforms spread false information and create filter bubbles and echo chambers. As a result, corruption, abuses of power, and human rights violations can continue without accountability. The need for courageous, fact‑based journalism is therefore greater than ever. Conferences on independent journalism, such as Truth Tellers, are essential for strengthening networks, knowledge, and resilience among journalists worldwide, as well as for highlighting new voices and methods capable of addressing todays and tomorrow’s challenges. By bringing together leading journalists, researchers, and innovators, these events create a platform for exchanging experiences, developing skills, and fostering cross‑border collaboration—crucial for defending democracy and the public’s right to truthful information.

In this project Durham University aims to strengthen investigative journalism globally by enabling the Truth Tellers Summit—an arena for knowledge exchange, networking, and the development of the investigative journalism of the future.

What happens in the project?

  • Planning, implementation, and evaluation of the conference program.
  • Panel discussions, lectures, workshops, mentoring, and networking activities.
  • Dedicated support for young and emerging journalists through the Bootstrappers Program, which provides training, mentorship, and networking opportunities to strengthen the next generation of investigative reporters.
  • The summit content is shared digitally through livestreams, podcasts, and reports, enabling global reach—including in countries with limited press freedom.

Why is the project supported?

The project contributes to an open and democratic society by promoting free and independent journalism. The Swedish public benefits from increased access to reliable information, strengthened press freedom, and international perspectives on societal issues.
