Malawi is facing the challenges of an ageing population, with projections indicating that by 2050, 17% of the population will be aged 60 and above. Society has not kept pace with increased life expectancy, and until recently, little attention has been given to how to care for the older generation—creating significant gaps and challenges. In addition, age discrimination remains deeply rooted in the country.
However, there is now a window of opportunity: Malawi has adopted a new law on ageing. This legislation provides a legal framework for the protection of older people, but its implementation is hindered by low public awareness, weak institutions, and limited capacity at the grassroots level.
Through this project, HelpAge International UK aims to strengthen local groups in Malawi to document and advocate against violations of older people’s rights, raise public awareness, and improve accountability and legal protection mechanisms.
What happens in the project?
- This project is a collaboration between HelpAge International UK and the local organization MANEPO.
- A total of 2,000 leaders from older people’s organizations, along with key local actors such as police officers, judicial staff, and municipal representatives, will be trained in the new law and in the rights of older people.
- These leaders will go on to establish systems for monitoring and accountability, and will engage in advocacy where gaps and violations are identified.
- An awareness campaign will be carried out to increase public understanding of older people’s rights.
- Older individuals will be equipped with knowledge and tools to claim and defend their rights.
- MANEPO and HelpAge will also organize national and regional policy dialogues, engage decision-makers, and produce three policy briefs highlighting key shortcomings in the implementation of the law.
- Advocacy efforts will be shared with the African Union and various UN platforms to promote broader recognition and action.
Why is the project supported?
By promoting access to legally guaranteed rights, the project helps ensure that older people in Malawi can live with dignity and security.
