Coastal Ecosystem Initiative
As part of our environmental commitments, we launched a targeted initiative to support coastal ecosystems – recognizing their vital role in preserving biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience, and sustaining human life.

Background
Coastal ecosystems are among the most biologically diverse and productive environments on Earth. Their ability to store large amounts of carbon makes some coastal habitats critical in the fight against climate change. Acting as natural buffers against flooding and extreme weather, they protect both people and nature, and help build resilience to climate impacts.
The aim of this initiative is to strengthen the biodiversity and protective capacity of coastal ecosystems along our shores. To achieve this, we support projects that:
- Reduce human impact on coastal ecosystems
- Conserve and restore key coastal habitats
- Harness the power of nature to build societal resilience and safeguard coastal ecosystems
- Promote local engagement and community mobilization
Results
In March 2024, we announced a total of 21,360,000 SEK in funding to six organizations working to protect and restore coastal ecosystems.
The organizations receiving support are:
- Biosphere Area Blekinge Archipelago – 1,080,000 SEK
- Stichting Wetlands International – 5,780,000 SEK
- Nämdö Green Archipelago – 2,000,000 SEK
- Stockholm Environment Institute – 5,500,000 SEK
- The Nature Conservancy – 5,000,000 SEK
- Baltic Salmon Foundation – 2,000,000 SEK
