How We Work
Our Approach
We provide support to both Swedish and international organizations so they can carry out projects that create positive change locally, nationally, and globally. We have an open application process, and welcome all kinds of ideas from civil society – ideas aimed at promoting long-term solutions to both local and global societal challenges.
To strengthen civil society, we support organizations across a wide range of areas and sectors, each with different needs. The diversity of projects we fund creates a dynamic collection of initiatives with impact on multiple levels, generating positive change and a better world.
Our Focus Areas
To strengthen civil society in response to the societal challenges we see, we focus our work on four Focus areas:
Climate and Environment
The climate crisis and loss of biodiversity are two of the most pressing challenges of our time. These threats require immediate and coordinated actions as they affect our ecosystem, society, and people’s general well-being. But it is still possible to change this negative trajectory if we act swiftly and sustainably.
We fund projects that protect and preserve nature, reduce emissions, and strengthen humanity’s response to climate change. We specifically prioritize initiatives that address the most urgent climate challenges within in Sweden and around the world to help build a more sustainable society and future. We also want to help civil society advocate for change, shift public opinions, and engage new target groups to protect our planet and biodiversity.
Culture
A free and exploratory cultural life is crucial for a strong and vibrant democratic society. Art and culture have the power to open minds, bring people together, and hold space for new voices and perspectives that challenge norms. But freedom of expression is under threat in many parts of the world, and access to the arts and culture is far from equal.
We fund a wide variety of cultural projects, including work that protects freedom of expression and promotes cultural diversity. We prioritize initiatives that strengthens creators ability to work freely, broaden access to the arts, and use creative expression to challenge norms, spark discussions, and contribute to societal development. By supporting a free and inclusive cultural life we want to contribute to a society where more voices are heard, and creativity and imagination can be a driving force for change.
Human Rights and Democracy
A democratic society is built on the principle that everyone has the ability to influence their own lives and society, feel included, and develop to their full potential. But democracy is being challenged, both within Sweden and around the world by increasing inequality, discrimination, disinformation and a lack of rule of law. When power isn’t checked and accountability isn’t enforced, our most fundamental rights are at risk.
We want to help reverse antidemocratic trends and protect the progress that has been made. For this reason, we fund projects that strengthen civil society’s ability to respond to violations of human rights and threats to democracy. We prioritize initiatives that promote equality, accountability, and participation in democratic processes in Sweden and globally and that address the most critical challenges of our time for building a more peaceful, inclusive, and just society.
Sport for Development
Sports have a unique power to bring people together, establish community, and create belonging. Sports are important to a healthy society both in Sweden and around the globe. Today, there is a growing movement to use sport as a tool to address social challenges. We see sport as a platform that allows people to unite, grow, and make change.
We fund projects and organizations that use sport as a basis for social change in areas such as; mental and physical health, violence and conflict prevention, integration and equality. By strengthening organizations that use sport as a tool to create change, we hope to shape a world where more people have the opportunity to participate, influence, and counteract current societal challenges.
These focus areas guide our internal work and the projects we fund. At the same time, we remain open to project ideas that fall outside of these categories but still contribute to positive societal development.
What You Can Expect When You Collaborate With Us
We aim to create change — not only by funding projects, but also by adding value to the organizations we work with. Our theory of change is based on strengthening civil society’s capacity through:
Flexible Support
We understand that things don’t always go as planned, and we are responsive to changing needs. There must be room to rethink and innovate during the course of a project, so it can be carried out with quality. For this reason, organizations we work with have the opportunity to grow and explore new ideas.
Dialogue and Learning
We are available for reflection and advice before, during, and after the course of the project. Through consistent communication and reporting, we share knowledge and experiences we have gathered over the years.
Access to Networks
We can connect organizations with other project partners and funders to create new collaborations and opportunities for continued funding.
Visibility and Outreach
We want to highlight projects through our own channels to increase visibility and help more people learn about the project’s results and impact. In some cases, there is also an opportunity to gain visibility through the Swedish Postcode Lottery’s channels.
Our hope is that the added value we aim to provide strengthens the capacity of organizations and increases the likelihood of project success.
Since 2021, we have been members of Effektfullt – a Swedish network for organizations working to measure and understand societal impact.
How Our Collaboration Works
- You and your organization will be assigned a dedicated project manager from our team, who will maintain close contact throughout the entire project period.
- Together with your project manager, you will agree on a reporting plan for the project – covering activities, costs, deviations, forecasts, and results.
- You and your organization will receive information and expectations regarding communication and visibility for your project.
- You and your organization can share materials and content from your project, which may be used to showcase the project on our website and in other channels.
- You and your organization are expected to keep your assigned project manager updated on new developments during the course of the project.
- You must submit a final report at the conclusion of the project, that describes the project’s progress and results. You will also be asked to reflect on what didn’t work and what lessons were learned. Additionally, you must submit a project audit conducted by an authorized auditor.
“The flexibility of our partnership with the Swedish Postcode Lottery Foundation has allowed us to focus on implementation rather than complicated and tedious reporting. This is very much appreciated and participates in the success of the project.”
