In the Arab world, the pandemic has coincided with a series of other ongoing crises that have collectively contributed to the fact that democratic progress is now in decline and the space for civil society is gradually shrinking. The Arab film industry has been heavily affected and risks losing skills to other sectors and countries. At the same time, there is a long history of social and political engagement in the independent film sector. Although filmmakers have achieved several international successes, they are struggling in their own countries– with censorship, restrictions and detentions. It is difficult to reach out to the local audience and thus for their films to have an impact.

In this project Beirut DC wants to strengthen the opportunities of the Arab independent film sector to collaborate with civil society organizations, and through film create engagement in current social issues and drive change.

The project is supported with SEK 2 150 000.
